What about South Africa?

Unlike Americans, South Africans do not have the luxury of being allowed to decide our laws at a provincial or national level via policies that have been petitioned and qualified for a public vote. We instead have our freedom and liberty defined by politicians who consistently display how out of touch they are or how little they care for the citizens of South Africa, often using our Constitution as little more than an occasional guideline that can be ignored if it does not fit their agenda.

I have just read your interpretation of the Defendant's Plea & refer to Section 15 for this comment. The defendants state that cannabis use is harmful to the health & social well being of the public as well as those around cannabis smokers. In my opinion & many others I might add, alcohol then falls into this category yet it is legal! Drinkers may be ingesting into their own bodies but again if that individual drinker cannot control him/herself then they become harmful to those around them as majority drinkers will still get in a car & drive on public roads where they can injure/kill innocent people driving under the influence - it is happening more & more these days. Many drinkers become aggressive towards others & their family members as well. If alcohol was not a drug or dependence producing substance, why do we have Alcoholics Anonymous which is an international organisation - surely this alone proves the dangers of alcohol?? Yet this drug is legal!!! As the defendants do not think cannabis/hemp can bring any economical value to the country, this must be the real reason why it is banned & not for any reason regarding public health & safety as they state. If the government officials truly cared for the citizens of this country, alcohol would have been illegal a long time ago but since they can make money on this, they have chosen to keep alcohol a legal drug despite it being an addictive drug for which many people are being treated & many young people are being treated.
At then end of the day, each of us are responsible for our own actions - responsibility & moderation of everything in life are the key elements here. I can only wonder what defence comebacks the defendants would have if we started petitioning for alcohol to be ruled as illegal....it is a dependence, mind-altering drug after all - all the reasons they are giving for cannabis not to be legalised!!

Hops, a natural preservative used in the Beer Brewing process is in the Cannabaceae family, which includes the Cannabis genera(Dagga).

Both Hops and Cannabis plants have aromatic flowers with complex properties - it is said that Hops can be replaced by Cannabis and has much the same preservative effect as Hops - and creates so called "Hemp Beer" giving the beer a distinct and complex aroma and flavor.

People who choose to use Dagga already do so despite what the law says - it is one of the most used illicit substances Globally and in South Africa. There are not thousands of people out there waiting for it to be legalized before they light up.

Dagga does not agree with all people, and it is their personal responsibility to stay clear of it, not Big Brothers - The campaign for re-legalisation has nothing to do with encouraging people to use Dagga - it is a means to stop the criminalization of otherwise law-abiding citizens who choose to use Dagga as a responsible adult.

What Craig is promoting is called Prohibition and as we know, given we have had 80 years of its devastating effects, it DOES NOT WORK and in the South African context only serves to further marginalize the poor(including Rural growers for whom it is their only cash crop) and further corruption amongst Police Agents.

Alternately, If we are to adhere to Craigs' ideology of Prohibition we must then add substances like Sugar, Coffee, Cigarettes, Alcohol, Coke-a-cola, prescription medication and other to the list.

I have to say, i actually agree to a certain extent with Craig McLeod (2 posts below this one).
Everything that he says I have considered before and is very relevant on a mass scale population, where there are millions of people (98% of whom are driven by the media and thier own social instability and welfare, and easily manipulated into following, OR TO STOP FOLLOWING propaganda campaigns). It will only take 1 full generation of children before it becomes fully socially acceptable for THIER children to be smoking weed before the ages of 13 and the whole idea of weed being potentially harmful (even in the slightest!) will be gone.
Another downside to legalization is whether it will be regulated or not, because if its regulated the way it is in the US, then prices will be inflated 800% somewhere around R300 for a gram of medicinal white widow, which I believe should cost no more than R10 a gram or so, as it is no different from a carrot, strawberry, or a lemon.

I must must be the only pro dagga activist thats shooting negetives here, haha xD .. but people must understand that legalization doesn't make everything ok overnight, and that we must still be very carefull how we handle things for a full generation after legalization, before we can say we have won the battle :)
